Species we mill for knife handles

Swiss Pear

Pyrus communis
~700 kg/m³

Warm pinkish-cream with very fine, even grain. Easy to shape and sand, and it takes oil finishes beautifully — a classic handle timber for kitchen and bushcraft knives.

Castello Boxwood

Calycophyllum multiflorum
~830 kg/m³

Pale creamy-yellow, dense and glass-smooth. Very hard-wearing in the hand and the finest surface finish of any species we stock.

Black Hornbeam

Carpinus betulus, dyed
~820 kg/m³

European hornbeam dyed through the full cross-section. A deep, even black that cannot sand or wear away — an ebony alternative for scales.

Karelian Birch

Betula pendula var. carelica
~650 kg/m³

Figured birch with dramatic flame and fleck. Every blank is different, so every handle is a one-off.

How our blanks are prepared

  • Cut from our own kiln-dried stock, never from reclaimed or unseasoned wood.
  • Dried to 8–10% moisture content, so handles stay stable after fitting.
  • Milled square on all faces to ±1 mm — no twist, no snipe.
  • Thick enough at 30 mm to resaw into a matched pair of scales.
  • Shipped from the EU, so EU customers pay no import duty or customs handling.

Frequently asked questions

What size are your knife blanks?

Every blank is milled to 40 × 30 × 140 mm, which is enough for a full hidden-tang handle or for resawing into a matched pair of scales. Tolerance is ±1 mm on width and thickness.

Can I get matched scales from one blank?

Yes. At 30 mm thick a blank resaws comfortably into two book-matched scales of roughly 12–13 mm, allowing for the saw kerf and clean-up.

Are the blanks dry and stable?

All stock is kiln-dried to 8–10% moisture content and clean-milled on all faces, so blanks stay stable after shaping and finishing.

Do you ship knife blanks outside the EU?

Yes — we ship worldwide from Tallinn, Estonia. Blanks are compact, so postage stays modest even to the US, Canada and Australia.

Can I order a custom size or species?

Yes. Tell us the dimensions, species and quantity on the custom order page and we will quote milling from our own stock.
