What we supply instrument makers, and what we do not: precision-milled boxwood, CITES-free black hornbeam and Swiss pear for the small components where movement ruins an instrument.
Let us be clear about scope before anything else. We are a precision mill, not a tonewood merchant. We do not sell spruce tops, figured maple backs, neck blanks or bookmatched plates, and if that is what you came for, we are the wrong supplier.
What we do supply is the other half of an instrument: pegs, end pins, purfling and stringing, bindings, linings, rosette elements, fingerboard-scale dark stock, inlay and decorative components. These are small parts, and small parts are exactly where moisture content and thickness tolerance decide whether a joint holds for thirty years or opens in a heating season.
Three species carry almost all of this work: Castello boxwood for pale hard fittings, black hornbeam as a CITES-free ebony substitute, and Swiss pear for bindings, linings and inlay grounds.
Why tolerance matters more on small parts
A back plate can be tuned as you work. A purfling channel cannot: it is routed to a dimension, and the purfling either fits it or it does not. Stock held to ±0.10 mm goes in with glue and stays; stock that varies half a millimetre needs shimming in some places and forcing in others, and a forced purfling is a crack waiting for a dry winter.
The same applies to bindings, linings and rosette elements. All of them are glued into a channel of fixed width, all of them are thin enough that they follow the channel rather than resisting it, and all of them are visible forever.
Moisture content is the second half of the argument. Timber that arrives at 12% and settles to 7% in a heated shop shrinks after you fit it. Our stock is kiln-dried to 6–8% and allowed to settle before milling, which is the condition it should be in when it becomes part of an instrument.

The three species
Castello Boxwood — the traditional fitting wood

Boxwood fittings are traditional for good reason: the wood is hard enough to take the wear a peg sees, fine enough to hold a turned or carved profile at small diameter, and it burnishes to a satin surface off the tool without any finish at all. Its pale cream colour warms slowly with age in a way players find attractive rather than dirty.
Castello (Calycophyllum multiflorum) at roughly 800–850 kg/m³ is the practical modern stand-in for European box: comparable hardness and grain, available in usable sizes, and not on any restricted list. Use it for pegs, end pins, button and saddle parts, purfling, rosette rings and any turned ornament.

Black Hornbeam — CITES-free ebony substitute

Ebony is CITES Appendix II, and for a maker who ships instruments across borders that is paperwork on every sale, plus a price that has roughly tripled in a generation. Black hornbeam gives you the visual and mechanical role without either problem: a dense European hardwood, grain so fine it is nearly featureless, dyed through to a deep black.
Dyed through is the operative phrase. File a chamfer, sand a radius or scrape a binding flush and the exposed surface is still black. Surface-ebonised parts fail this test immediately.
Be honest in your specification. It is not Diospyros, it is slightly less dense than African blackwood or Gaboon ebony, and a customer buying a traditional-spec instrument should be told what the fittings are. Sold as what it is — a CITES-free black hardwood — it is an easy sell, and increasingly a preferred one.

Swiss Pear — bindings, linings and inlay

Pear is the utility hardwood of instrument decoration. It bends readily in thin section with heat and water, glues without starving, cuts cleanly across the grain for inlay, and takes dye evenly — which is why it was the historical wood for ebonised fittings before dyed stock was available commercially.
Use it for bindings, linings, kerfing stock, inlay grounds, rosette elements and any decorative component where you want a warm mid-tone against darker or paler neighbours. At 0.6–1 mm it is also the standard marquetry thickness for headstock and rosette work.

Purfling, stringing and bindings
Purfling is three thin laminations glued into a channel, and every one of the three has to be right. Traditional violin purfling runs black–white–black at roughly 1.2 mm total; guitar bindings and stringing lines vary far more widely, which is why buying strip stock in defined sections beats ripping your own.
Our square strips run from 2×2 mm down through the sizes usable for stringing, and our planking strips cover 3×0.8 mm to 7×2 mm in pear, boxwood, hornbeam and cedar. - Bend bindings and purfling wet with heat; pear and cedar take a tight radius readily at 0.8–1 mm, hornbeam and boxwood need a gentler radius and more patience.
- Bend a test length from the same batch before committing the set — bending behaviour varies more between boards than between species at the same thickness.
- Cut purfling channels to the measured stock thickness, not the nominal one. With ±0.10 mm stock those numbers are the same, which is the point.
- Wipe glue squeeze-out immediately when black or coloured stock meets pale stock; dye migrates across a wet joint.
- Order enough for the whole instrument in one go — a single milling run matches; separate runs may differ slightly in shade.
Rosettes, headstock inlay and marquetry
Rosette and headstock work is marquetry under another name: thin, dimensionally consistent stock in a controlled palette, assembled flat and levelled after gluing. The palette that works on instruments is small — a warm mid-tone, a true black, a near-white and one or two saturated accents.
Pear supplies the mid-tone, black hornbeam the black, European white maple the highlight and coloured hornbeam the accents in brown, red, green and yellow. All four are dyed through or naturally coloured, so levelling a rosette flush does not change its colour.
Work at 0.6 or 0.8 mm for classical rosette tiles and 1 mm for larger parquetry. Consistency of thickness across the whole assembly matters more than any single element being exactly right — a flat rosette levels with a scraper; an uneven one needs sanding that eats the surrounding top.
CITES, sourcing and shipping instruments
Makers who sell internationally have to think about species before aesthetics. Ebony and rosewood species carry CITES obligations that follow the instrument across borders; documentation errors can strand a shipment. Our entire range is CITES-free: pear, hornbeam, maple and alder are European species from managed forestry, and Castello is not listed.
That is the practical argument for hornbeam over ebony for many builders, particularly those selling to touring musicians who cross borders regularly. State the species honestly on your specification sheet and it becomes a selling point rather than a substitution.

- Do you sell tonewood for guitars and violins?
- No. We do not supply spruce tops, figured maple backs, sides or neck blanks. We supply precision-milled fittings, purfling, bindings, linings, rosette elements and inlay stock in boxwood, black hornbeam and Swiss pear.
- Is black hornbeam a good ebony substitute for fittings?
- Yes for appearance and most mechanical purposes. It is a dense European hardwood dyed through to deep black, so filed and sanded surfaces stay black, and it is CITES-free. It is not botanically ebony and is slightly less dense, so describe it accurately on your specification.
- What wood should I use for violin pegs?
- Castello boxwood for traditional pale fittings — hard, fine-grained, burnishes off the tool and wears rather than dents. Black hornbeam where a black fitting is wanted without CITES paperwork.
- Can I get purfling in a custom section?

- What thickness should bindings be?
- Most bindings fall between 0.8 and 2 mm depending on the instrument and channel. Order the measured thickness you cut your channel to — our strips are held to ±0.10 mm so nominal and actual are the same.
- Are your woods CITES-listed?
- None of them. Pear, hornbeam, maple and alder are European species from managed forestry, and Castello boxwood is unlisted. This is a practical advantage for makers shipping instruments internationally.
- Will the black dye bleed into adjacent pale wood?
- Only across a wet glue joint. Wipe squeeze-out immediately when black or coloured hornbeam meets pale stock and there is no migration once the joint is dry.
- How stable is the stock for glued-in components?
- It is kiln-dried to 6–8% and settled before milling, so it is at the moisture content it should be when it becomes part of an instrument. Let it acclimatise in your shop for a few days before fitting critical parts.
- Which wood for a classical guitar rosette?
- Swiss pear for the warm mid-tone, black hornbeam for the black, European white maple for highlights and coloured hornbeam for saturated accents. Work at 0.6–0.8 mm and keep thickness consistent across the whole assembly.
- Can you match a batch across a whole instrument?
