About Black Hornbeam

The most sought-after ebony substitute for ship modelling — European hornbeam, deep black throughout. EU-sourced and rough cut in Tallinn, Estonia.

Black Hornbeam is European hornbeam (Carpinus betulus) dyed right through to a deep, even black. It gives builders the look of ebony — without the cost, scarcity or the splintering that genuine ebony can bring to fine work.

Hornbeam is one of the hardest and densest woods grown in Europe, with a tight, almost featureless grain. That uniform structure is exactly what makes it cut and carve cleanly, holding sharp corners and fine edges where coarser dark woods would tear out.

Each piece is dyed and kiln-dried before being rough cut, so the colour runs through the full thickness — sanding, resawing or shaping a part won't expose a pale core.

A traditional choice for billiard and pool cue making — hornbeam's exceptional density, tight grain and stiffness make it a well-regarded forearm and handle stock, and the deep-dyed black version is popular for striking contrast inlays, points and butt sections.

A note on finish and treatment: this hornbeam is deep dyed all the way through — the black colour penetrates the full cross-section rather than sitting on the surface, so resawing, planing or carving into the piece reveals the same dark tone throughout. The wood is not resin-stabilized, so it remains natural timber with normal wood behaviour — expect typical seasonal movement and treat it like any other unstabilized hardwood when machining, glueing and finishing.
