Architectural modelling is unforgiving about dimension. A strip that is 0.3 mm over at 1:100 is 30 mm over in reality — a visibly fat mullion. Basswood from a craft shop is typically sold to a nominal size with no stated tolerance, which is why joints stack up wrong on a long facade.
Everything we mill is held to a stated tolerance and cut from fine-grained hardwood rather than soft, fuzzy stock, so edges stay sharp, laser cuts stay clean and painted surfaces do not need filling. Why fine hardwood beats craft basswood
Basswood and balsa are easy to cut, which is their whole appeal, but the same softness produces crushed edges at every knife cut, fuzzy laser kerfs, and a surface that drinks primer. Fine-grained hardwood at 700–800 kg/m³ takes a scalpel edge cleanly, holds a 1 mm mullion without crushing under clamping pressure, and needs one thin coat of primer rather than three.
The second difference is consistency. Sheets and strips milled to a controlled thickness let you build a facade where twenty identical members really are identical — the difference between a model that reads as precise and one that reads as handmade.

Choosing a species for the finish you want
For painted models, pick on surface quality rather than colour: European white maple and Swiss pear both prime to a glass-smooth surface with no grain telegraphing. For natural-finish presentation models, pear reads as a warm timber tone at any scale, boxwood as a pale stone or render, and black hornbeam gives crisp dark reveals and shadow gaps without paint.

Cutting, laser work and assembly
Hand cutting: score with a fresh scalpel against a steel rule and take several light passes. Fine hardwood does not tolerate a heavy first cut, but it rewards light ones with an edge that needs no sanding.
Laser: our 3 mm laser sheets in maple, alder and pear are the standard stock for cut-out facades and floor plates, and thin modelling sheets from 0.6 mm cut extremely fast. Mask the face to keep smoke residue off surfaces you intend to leave natural.
Assembly: use PVA for wood-to-wood joints where you want a little repositioning time, and thin CA where you need an instant tack on a small member. Because the material is dense, joints do not starve — a thin glue line is enough and keeps dimensions honest.
Painting: one coat of thin acrylic primer, a scuff with 400 grit, then colour. Grain is fine enough that nothing telegraphs through.
