About Castello Boxwood
Castello Boxwood (Calycophyllum multiflorum) is the modern standard for boxwood lumber in high-end model ship planking, replacing the now-scarce European boxwood. Its pale cream colour and near-invisible grain give a smooth, uniform run where no single piece stands out from the next.
Boxwood is exceptionally dense and stable, so pieces hold their dimensions precisely and bend cleanly around the hull without crushing or splitting at tight curves. The fine grain means edges stay sharp and glue joints sit tight.

Model making & miniatures
Castello boxwood is the reference wood for museum-quality ship models, architectural models and replicas where the finest detail has to read clearly. Its grain is close to invisible, so carved head rails, gratings, mouldings and miniature furniture keep their crispness at scale instead of dissolving into figure.
Fine woodworking & restoration
In restoration it stands in for the European boxwood used in period stringing, banding and decorative inlay, matching both the pale tone and the density. Marquetry cutters like it because it takes very narrow lines without crumbling, and its consistent colour means a repair does not announce itself once the finish is on.
Workshop machining
At roughly 830 kg/m³ this is the densest species we stock, and it rewards sharp tooling and moderate feeds. CNC carving and engraving hold exceptionally fine detail with clean vertical walls, scroll saw work leaves a burnished edge needing little sanding, and precision milling holds tolerance well because the wood barely moves.
Craft & instrument making
Traditionally a wind-instrument and tool-handle wood, boxwood turns to a near-ivory polish straight off the gouge — ideal for chess pieces, finials, knobs and pens. Carvers use it for the smallest figurative work, and knife makers choose it for fine, checkered or fluted handles.
Boxwood is the choice when detail quality matters more than cost: the finest grain, the best surface finish and excellent dimensional stability, at the price of harder cutting and slower feeds. For large planked areas, pear or cedar are easier going and less expensive.

- Is Castello boxwood the same as European boxwood?
- No. Castello (Calycophyllum multiflorum) is a South American species used as the modern substitute for the now-scarce European box (Buxus sempervirens). It is similar in colour, grain and density and is far more available in usable sizes.
- Does it blunt tooling quickly?
- It is dense, so expect shorter edge life than pear or cedar. Sharp carbide on CNC work and freshly honed hand tools give the cleanest result.
- How well does it hold carved detail?
- Better than any other species we stock. The near-invisible grain means edges stay where you cut them rather than following the fibre.
- Does boxwood yellow with age?
- It deepens slightly from pale cream toward a warmer honey tone over years of light exposure. The change is even and does not blotch.
