About Coloured Hornbeam Lumber
Coloured Hornbeam is European hornbeam (Carpinus betulus) impregnated with dye right through the full thickness. Hornbeam is dense and tight-grained, so the dye penetrates deep into the fibres rather than sitting on the surface — planing, sanding, turning or carving into the piece reveals the same colour throughout.
Each piece measures 40 × 40 × 400 mm and is supplied ready for the lathe, bandsaw, saw or carving bench. Finish to your own final dimensions; the colour will not sand or wear away.
Available in four standard colours: Brown, Red / Pink, Green and Yellow. Hornbeam is one of the hardest and densest woods grown in Europe, so the pieces work cleanly and hold sharp detail.

Model making & miniatures
Through-dyed hornbeam gives permanent colour without paint, which is useful for decorative model detail, display bases and miniature pieces where a painted surface would chip or read as plastic. The colour is in the fibre, so edges and end grain match the faces.
Fine woodworking & restoration
Its most common use is coloured inlay, stringing and banding, where it supplies tones no natural European timber offers while behaving like the surrounding wood. Because hornbeam is dense and tight-grained, narrow lines cut cleanly and stay sharp under a scraper.
Workshop machining
Dense at roughly 820 kg/m³, coloured hornbeam machines like the natural timber: clean CNC carving, crisp scroll saw cuts and precise milling. Supplied rough sawn at 40 × 40 × 400 mm, so plan a skim pass to your final dimension — the colour is unaffected by how much you remove.
Craft & turning
Turners use it for pens, knobs, finials and small bowls where vivid, fade-resistant colour is wanted straight off the tool. It also makes tough knife handles and scales, and carves for small decorative objects and jewellery.

- Will the colour sand or wear off?
- No. The dye is impregnated through the full cross-section, so sanding, turning and carving all reveal the same colour.
- Which colours are available?
- Brown, Red / Pink, Green and Yellow as standard, supplied at 40 × 40 × 400 mm rough sawn.
- Is it lightfast?
- The dyes are stable in normal indoor light. As with any coloured material, long-term direct sunlight will gradually soften the tone; a UV-resistant finish helps.
- Can it be glued and finished normally?
- Yes. Use standard PVA or CA adhesives on clean, freshly machined surfaces, and finish with oil, lacquer or CA as you would with natural hornbeam.
